Polishing vs cleaning — what is the difference?

Cleaning removes dirt. Polishing restores finish. They are related and often done together, but they are not the same job.

A clean handles whatever is on the surface — dust, stains, scuffs, salt marks from rain. A polish handles the leather itself: feeding it with wax or cream, restoring the colour where it has faded, and bringing the surface back to a uniform finish. Skipping the clean before polish locks dirt under the polish layer, which is why both should happen in the right order. If you have ever polished over scuffed shoes at home and the scuffs stayed, that is why.

Leather and patent leather

Standard wax or cream polish, applied in thin coats, buffed with a horsehair brush. Patent leather has its own treatment — it does not take wax, so we use specialist cleaners that restore the high-gloss finish without dulling it.

Suede and nubuck — why we brush, not polish

Suede is the most common category where people ask about polishing. The honest answer is that it does not get polished. The nap gets brushed, scuffs get treated with an eraser block, and we use suede-specific cleaners and colour-restoring sprays. Putting wax polish on suede flattens the nap permanently. We tell people this on the phone and we would rather lose the booking than do the wrong thing to suede.

We match the polish colour carefully, build the layers thinner than standard, and for any shoe valued above AED 3,000 we send a photo before and after. When to polish vs when to clean vs when to restore

A simple rule we share with customers.

If the shoes are clean but the surface looks dull or dry, polish them. If the surface is fine but there is visible dirt or stains, clean them. If the colour has faded unevenly or the leather has gone through scuffs to the original colour underneath, you are looking at colour restoration rather than polishing.

The order of operations is also fixed: clean first, condition second, polish third. Doing them out of order seals dirt under polish or leaves the leather dry under the finish. Our standard service does all three for you so you do not have to think about it.
